Professionalism and professional development 21st century lawyers and law students are challenged to take charge of their careers at the most basic and most sophisticated levels. To carve out satisfying careers, they must:
- master basic career development tools (self-assessment, resumes, cover letters, networking),
- move swiftly into the culture of work (working with all generations, working with support staff, identifying and navigating relationships among stakeholders at work), and
- embrace the business of law (professional development, changing technology, economic realities and entrepreneurship in public or private practice).
Alternative careers “What is an alternative career and how can I get one?” A successful transition to a job without the title “lawyer” requires translating legal skills and experience to attract an employer who might not otherwise have considered a law-trained candidate.

Manager's Nightmare #442
A long-time employee retires with great fanfare and a terrific party. She retires to a place with no internet access, and, in any event, she is disinclined to be helpful to her former co-workers, in part because she believes that she was never treated with sufficient respect. Within a few days, it becomes apparent that it will take three people to replace her and that no one is exactly clear about everything that she did and how she made those tasks look easy. For her co-workers and managers, every day is an increasingly unpleasant surprise. |
